Columbus weekend (10/5/18-10/8/18) is one of the best times of the year in the North Conway area. Here are five reasons to visit the Mount Washington Valley during your Columbus Day break!
1. The Leaves!
In an area already known for its natural beauty, Columbus Day weekend, with fall foliage at its peak, makes the Mount Washington Valley exceptionally beautiful. Just driving around North Conway and Mount Washington Valley, you are treated to an incredible array of reds, oranges, and yellows. Added to it are the last blooms of summer, creating a kaleidoscope of color. The area is famous around the world for its incredible foliage. You’ll have a camera full of amazing photographs by the end of your trip! Cathedral Ledge provides amazing views of the valley below, and is just a few minutes’ drive from downtown North Conway. You can reach the top in your car, or via a short hike from the trailhead below.
2. The Weather!
The weather in North Conway is perfect in early October. The summer heat has passed, but it’s still plenty warm enough to get out and enjoy the White Mountains. The days are often sunny with a cool breeze, which is perfect weather for just about any activity. It gets cool at night, perfect for a restful night’s sleep at a vacation rental home!
3. The Great Outdoors!
There are endless options for outdoor activities including hiking, scenic drives, trail running, and mountain or road biking. Typically, the roads, trails, and climbing routes are less crowded in the Fall than the busy summer vacation season, so you will have easier access to the incredible number of outdoor adventures the area offers. Pinkham Notch and Crawford Notch are both a short drive from North Conway, and provide incredible access to the outdoors. There are also many wonderful Covered Bridges and scenic rivers for your sight-seeing delight!
4. The Shopping!
It’s also perfect weather for shopping at Settler’s Green, North Conway’s huge outdoor outlet shopping area. Many of the stores have special sales and prices during Columbus Day weekend. For information on the outlets, hours, and a map, visit the Settler’s Green website! Plus, you can get ahead of the game and gear up for ski season. EMS, Joe Jones, and many local businesses have Fall sales on new and used ski gear to help you get ready for the winter!
5. The Fryeburg Fair!
And if gorgeous weather, breathtaking scenery, and a plethora of things to do weren’t enough, there’s the Fryeburg Fair! The Fair features an impressively large display of livestock competitions and shows, harness racing, horse pulling, antique farm equipment displays and demonstrations, gardening and cooking contests, a petting zoo, live musical acts, amusement rides, food, and handcrafts galore. The Fryeburg Fair is an annual MUST-DO for folks throughout New England. The fair runs through Columbus Day weekend from Sunday, September 30th, through Sunday, October 7th.
