Downhill skiing in North Conway is a total blast, but it has a gentler, more relaxing cousin that’s just as fun! Nordic (also known as cross-country) skiing is a fantastic winter activity that combines the best parts of snowshoeing and skiing. You’ll race through the forest, down hills and even up them on your skis as you take in the sights. There are several organizations for cross country skiing in North Conway that provide access to great nordic trails – here are some of the best!
Great Glen is one of the premiere cross-country skiing locations in the valley. It has over 45 kilometers of professionally groomed ski trails. With nice, wide track, this area is perfect for skate skiing or traditional, whichever you prefer. It’s located in Pinkham Notch, so it offers unparalleled views of the surrounding mountains. Mt. Washington and the rest of the Presidentials will be within view throughout your day. Great Glen also has a ski school and all of the rental equipment you’ll need. They have a specially-priced “learn to ski” package for new skiers, too!
Located south of Mount Washington near charming Jackson Village, the Jackson Ski Touring Foundation (JXC) has 50 kilometers of trails to ski. They have gear available for rent, as well as a ski school, with beginner group lessons and instruction for more advanced skiers, too. One neat feature – the trails stay open after dark! Grab a headlamp and do some night skiing! JXC also has many events throughout the winter, including snowshoe tours and a ski waxing clinic.
King Pine is largely known for its downhill ski hill, but it is also a part of Purity Springs Resort. Purity Springs features ice skating on the lake as well as snowshoeing and nordic ski trails. There are over 20 kilometers of trail, and this is a great option if you are renting a vacation home in Madison! King Pine has a rental shop if you are in need of gear. One of the best parts: admission to the cross country and snowshoe trails is included with your lift ticket to King Pine!
Miles upon miles of backcountry and groomed nordic ski trails, right in the heart of the valley. The Ski Touring foundation maintains more than 40 kilometers of trail, through forests and fields, connecting many local inns and businesses. The trails traverse some of the most scenic areas of the valley, connecting Intervale to North Conway. The Foundation organizes an incredible annual event called the Chocolate Festival – read more about this incredible adventure here! This is also a great option if you have a dog – the whitaker woods portion of the trail network is dog-friendly!
