Blueberry season is fast approaching. North Conway is an excellent spot to go picking! Here are some of the best spots to pick North Conway blueberries, and a couple of ideas on how to enjoy them!
To the south of North Conway, in Eaton, lies Foss Mountain. This is perhaps the most popular blueberry-picking spot in the Mt. Washington Valley, and for good reason. There are very large blueberry fields alongside a nicely maintained, gradual 1.5 mile trail up the mountain itself. Go for a nice hike, have a picnic, and go blueberry picking! The view from the top of Foss are amazing.
Head North from North Conway into Bartlett to visit Attitash! In the summer, this ski mountain is a ton of fun for kids, with a mountain coaster, zipline, and many other rides. While you’re visiting, pick some blueberries to keep in the fridge! Or stay right across the street at an Attitash Mountain Village vacation rentals home through Pinkham Vacation Rentals!
South Moat Mountain
For a wonderful and challenging hike to go along with your blueberry picking, head to South Moat. This is a five mile round trip hike with excellent 360 degree views from the summit. The trailhead is off of Passaconaway Road, which runs parallel to the Kancamagus Highway. The blueberries begin to emerge in season as you approach the summit, so you will have earned your blueberries by the time you reach them!
Tasty Food Ideas
Now that you’ve picked your North Conway blueberries, it’s time to enjoy them! Pop them right in your mouth if you’re hungry, or stick them in the freezer for a few hours for natural popsicle bites! If you have plenty saved up, make some jams or jellies to enjoy year round! Whatever you do, don’t forget to bake a blueberry pie. And why not enjoy some blueberries for breakfast? Cook them right into your pancakes or add them to your oatmeal. On a hot afternoon, there’s nothing better than an ice-cold blueberry lemonade! Or stop by one of the local farm stands or farmer’s markets to pick up some tasty blueberry treats!
While you’re visiting North Conway, stop in at the Moat Mountain Smokehouse for a taste of their delicious blueberry beer! Or whip up this delicious blueberry mocktail (or add your favorite liquor to make it a true cocktail):
First, create a syrup by bring the following ingredients to a boil over medium heat in a saucepan: 1.5 cups of blueberries, ⅓ cup of granulated sugar, 2 tbsp of lemon juice, and 2-3 sprigs of mint. Mash the blueberries after it comes to a boil, then strain the syrup into a storage container using a colander. Cool the syrup in the fridge. Next, in a pitcher, muddle lots of mint, then add the blueberry syrup and ginger ale at a ratio of 1 part syrup to 3 parts ginger ale, and stir. Pour into a glass of ice and add a few sprigs of mint and fresh blueberries to garnish!
