If you’re looking for the perfect family ski destination, look no further than North Conway’s own Cranmore Mountain. Visible from the heart of downtown, Cranmore is a local landmark. Whether it’s hitting the slopes or tubing in the Mountain Adventure park, everyone in your family is sure to have a blast!
History of Cranmore Mountain
Formerly called Lookout Mountain, Cranmore was opened as a ski mountain in the winter of 1937 by North Conway native Henry Gibson. George Morton constructed the Skimobile lift the next winter, a set of 60 cars that were moved uphill on a wooden trestle. The Skimobile plus the addition of Hannes Schneider, a famed Alpine ski instructor whose release from Nazi imprisonment was secured by Henry Gibson, made Cranmore and North Conway a successful skiing destination, which it still is today.
The Modern Mountain
Cranmore Mountain extends 2,000 feet in elevation and occupies 170 acres. 56 trails are accessed by 9 lifts, a far cry from the single rope tow that started it all. For beginner skiers, there are 16 green trails (the easiest). Intermediate to advanced skiers can tackle the 25 blue (intermediate) or 15 black diamond (hardest) trails. Alternatively, for those that don’t own their own equipment, the mountain offers rental packages so you can hit the slopes prepared, or get your equipment tuned up in their shop before you shred. If you’re feeling a little rusty, sign up for group or private lessons offered by Cranmore’s pro staff.
Not Just Skiing
The mountain has plenty of activities for those who don’t feel like strapping on a pair of skis in the Mountain Adventure Park. Try snow tubing on the 10 snow tubing lanes, all serviced with a lift. The Mountain Coaster is a thrill ride for those ages 3 and up. You control your speed down the mountain, nice and leisurely or up to 25 mph for daredevils! For those of you feeling brave, try the Giant Swing which swings you higher and higher as you build speed. Don’t leave the Adventure Park without flying down the Soaring Eagle zip line, a 700-foot zip line adrenaline rush!
Rest and Relax!
After a full day on the slopes, visit one of North Conway’s delicious restaurants to refuel. Ranging from Italian to Thai food, North Conway’s dining scene has something for every palate. Plenty of restaurants offer takeout options for those who prefer to stay in and relax at night. Finally, why not stay close to the mountain and gather around a woodstove after your ski day at a vacation rental home?
