The Fryeburg Fair is one of the Mount Washington Valley’s biggest annual traditions. In 2018, it will start at 8am on Sunday, September 30th, and run through Sunday October 7th. We recommend that you book accommodations early, especially for Columbus Day weekend! Here are our top six reasons to visit the Fryeburg Fair!
Gospel, Bluegrass, Country, Folk, Jazz, or Rock – name your favorite flavor of music and the Fryeburg Fair will dish it out. Local and regional acts start when the fairgrounds open and continue through the day until the night show starts at 8pm. There are children’s’ music performers and balloon artists as well. Click here for a full listing of the musical acts performing at the Fair this year. And watch out – the devil’s coming up to Maine this year – the Charlie Daniels band is this year’s featured night show performer!
Vendors from across the state bring their wares to sell at the Fryeburg Fair. Unique handmade good from across New England make great gifts and housewares. Jams and jellies, maple syrup, quilts, carvings, souvenirs, trinkets, and curios galore are all on display and available for sale. Take something home for yourself or your family who weren’t lucky enough to attend!
Rides and Games
Carnival rides and games are an integral part of the Fair experience. Ride giant slides, spinning cups, and many other exciting attractions for kids and adults. Toss a ring onto a milk jug, knock over a bowling pin with a baseball, or win a horse race with a squirt gun. Try your luck at dozens of games on the Midway. Sheep dog trials, tractor pulls, and races of all kinds – there are tons of exciting events at the Fair. A crowd favorite is Woodsmen’s Day, which takes place on Monday, October 1st this year. Bow saws, chainsaws, and buck saws – if it can cut wood, chances are good there’s a competition for it. There’s even an axe toss and a pole climb! Fireman competitions are another exciting and unique show. For a full schedule of events taking place at the fair, click here!
There are several large exhibit halls spread out across the fairgrounds. You’ll see livestock of all kinds – cows, goats, rabbits, sheep, oxen, and pigs. Ever met a llama up close? This is your chance! There are exhibits for crafts and art, as well as photography and fine home goods. Much like the Smithsonian, you could spend your day browsing the exhibits and only feel like you saw a fraction of all that there is to see.
It may not all be healthy, but that’s not the point! Indulge in all of your favorite foods, from onion rings to bloomin onions, corn dogs to corn on the cob, and don’t forget the fried dough! If none of that is tempting enough, how about a friend oreo or snickers? Everyone needs a cheat day! There are also Specialty Foods such as cheeses and produce available for sale in their own exhibit hall, including many which you can purchase at the Fair and take home to enjoy later.
